Bubble Shows: Pros & Cons - NBC edition

In this list of blog series i'll present the pros and cons of every bubble show and also the possibilities of them returning. Don't expect to see shows like Grey's Anatomy, Modern Family & The Vampire Diaries on the list.

The Pros & Cons list concludes today with NBC

Harry's Law

In favorIts NBC most-watched scripted series with an average of 8.7 million viewers. Despite very low ratings in young adults Harry's Law manages to deliver strong overall numbers in any timeslot the networks schedules it. And in NBC's condition which barely gets any eyeballs and with most of shows averaging 3-6 million viewers, that would be enough to warrant a season 3.  While not a critical darling like CBS' The Good Wife, it was nomitated for two Emmy awards last year, including Kathy Bates' nomination for the Outstanding Lead Actress in Drama Series and Paul McCrane's for Outstanding Guest Actor in Drama Series, which he won.

Against it: The adults 18-49 numbers are terrible and even you like or not (apparenly Kathy Bates doesn't like it) that's what advertisers pay for and actually for many decades now. Renewed or canceled Harry's Law will be one of the old skewing dramas in the history of television.

The Verdict: 50-50

Whitney

In favor: When NBC moved Whitney from its protected post-Office timeslot to anchor Wednesday night, everybody thought that the show was doomed. However the ratings were surprisingly decent, on par with the other struggling NBC comedies like Community and 30 Rock. Creatively, after a couple of horrific episodes the show found its legs.

Against it: Its time for NBC to clean house and cancel all the low- rated comedies. But that's  not going to happen. With a bunch of low rated sitcoms being ahead of Whitney on renewal prospects, for reasons that have nothing to do with ratings, Whitney's chances doesn't look particularly good. And that i guess won't bother star, Whitney Cummings whose CBS' smash hit 2 Broke Girls already got a renewal and she will also host a new talk show on E!

The Verdict:  40-60

Are You There Chelsea?

In favor: NBC wants some Chelsea Handler on the network. (Yes that was the only thing that i could think of).

Against it: With those ratings its simply dead.

The Verdict:  1-99

Awake

In favor: Well received by critics, Awake started in decent for NBC. But...

Against it: ..since the premiere episode it lost 60% of its audience. In its most recent airing last Thursday it barely registered with a 0.7 rating in adults 18-49 and 2 million viewers. The real question is not if it will be renewed but if NBC will air the remaining episodes in the timeslot (Thursday 10/9c) Those affialiates are not happy.

The Verdict:  1-99

30 Rock

In favor: The ratings has been significantly down versus last year but there are different rules for Tina Fey and 30 Rock. NBC loves her, and so the Academy of Television Arts and Sciences, given the countless Emmy awards and nominations the sitcoms has received the past few years. So it will come back, possibly for a final season.

Against it: If this is the year that NBC will cancel every single low rated show yes it'd be in danger. But i don't see Robert Greenbalt being that aggresive.

The Verdict: 95-5

Up All Night

In favor: The only thing that can save this family-turned workplace sitcom is the strong pedigree and the small but  A-List cast including  Christina Applegate, Will Arnett and Maya Rudolph.

Against it: It was a self-starteR last fall on its Wednesday timeslot scoring even an impressive 3.7 rating in adults 18-49. But then  NBC moved it on the Thursday comedy block and the ratings fall almost every week.

The Verdict: 30-70

Community

In favor: The fact that its one season away from reaching enough episodes for syndication  almost guarantees that the low-rated comedy will return for another season. Moreover, Comedy Central acquired the right to air reruns so that gives another reason to Sony to push for another one season by giving to NBC a smaller fee. Its devoted fan base will probably be happy when NBC announces their fall schedule.

Against it: If NBC was in a slightly better shape this might be the final season for Community.

The Verdict: 90-10
